Prof PM Dixon is a graduate of University College Dublin, later obtaining a PhD on equine respiratory disease at The University of Edinburgh, where he worked for most of his professional career. He retired as Professor of Equine Surgery in 2021 and continues working as an independent surgical consultant. His main clinical and research interests are dental disorders and equine head and neck surgery. He has written circa 250 refereed publications with over 8400 citations, numerous textbooks, and book chapters on these topics.
He was awarded the Richard Hartley Clinical Prize for the best clinical article in the Equine Veterinary Journal on four occasions, the Equine Veterinary Journal open award and The Veterinary Journal Award, The Animal Health Trust Award for outstanding contributions to equine welfare for 1998 by the Princess Royal, Honorary Life Membership of BEVA in 2001 for contributions to equine surgery and honorary life membership of the European Veterinary Dental College. He is one of only two Europeans to have been awarded the American College of Veterinary Surgery Merit Award and the AAEP Frank Milne Award.
He has also trained over 60 postgraduate students and residents in these areas. He is a European Specialist in Equine Dentistry and a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialist in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery. He has presented hundreds of lectures and practical classes around the world on these topics.
